International Symposium on the use of nonconventional waters for achieving food security

September 2019 – FAO and the Government of Spain, in collaboration with WASAG, the Spanish Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Casa de América, are organizing the International Symposium on the use of nonconventional waters to be held in Madrid, Spain on 14-15 November 2019. One of the objectives of the Symposium is to analyze the challenges, constraints and opportunities of nonconventional water use in agriculture. Read more.


WASAG at the 3rd World Irrigation Forum – Bali, Indonesia

September 2019 - The 3rd World Irrigation Forum (WIF) brought together policy makers, experts, research institutions, NGOs and farmers and provided a platform for them to find solutions to advance irrigated agriculture. WASAG was well represented at the Forum, with several members of its Steering Committee participating in various sessions as speakers. Read more.


WASAG at the 2019 Stockholm World Water Week

August 2019 - Since its establishment in April 2017, WASAG has consistently participated in the Stockholm WWW, first with a showcase event in August 2017, followed by four technical sessions in 2018. This year, the WASAG partners hosted the following events. Read more.


The Swiss Federal Office for Agriculture funds WASAG

July 2019 - The Swiss Federal Office for Agriculture (FOAG) has signed a funding agreement to support WASAG and its work for the next three years (2019-2022). This is a direct follow up on the recommendations of the last session of FAO’s Committee on Agriculture (COAG). Read more.


Translating the Praia Commitments into action

June 2019 - The 17 Praia Commitments from the First WASAG International Forum on Water Scarcity in Agriculture held in Praia, Cabo Verde, from 19 to 22 March 2019, are being translated into action. These commitments are a synthesis of the recommendations formulated during the different sessions of the forum, led by the WASAG working groups. Following the Rome Statement adopted during the first partners’ meeting of 19-20 April 2017, the Praia Commitments constitute a major milestone and a key document for WASAG. Read more.   


Outcomes of the 1st WASAG International Forum on Water Scarcity in Agriculture

April 2019 – The first WASAG International forum on Water Scarcity in Agriculture Forum took place in Praia, Cabo Verde from 19 to 22 March 2019, under the theme ‘Leaving no one behind’. More than 300 delegates from 48 countries, including 30% of women, attended the forum. The participants have been invited to complete a survey to evaluate the forum. Read more.



1st WASAG International Forum on Water Scarcity in Agriculture

14 December 2018 - Under the patronage of Cabo Verde, in collaboration with Italy and FAO, WASAG announces its 1st  International Forum on Water Scarcity in Agriculture to be held in Praia, Cabo Verde from 19 to 22 March 2019, to coincide with the celebrations of the World Water Day 2019 which this year adopts  the theme of ‘Leaving no one behind’.



FAO and WASAG at World Water Week 2018

24 August 2018 - Organized by the Stockholm International Water Institute (SIWI), the World Water Week (WWW) is the annual focal point for the globe’s water issues. It focuses on new thinking and positive action toward water-related challenges and their impact on the world's environment, health, climate, economic and poverty reduction. This year, it carries the theme “Water, Ecosystems and Human Development”.  As has been the case in previous editions, WASAG will have a major presence at WWW 2018 and will convene/co-convene various events.


FAO work helps drive action agenda at desertification convention meet

22 September 2017 - Sustainable land, soil and water management will play a growing role in ending and reversing land degradation, and increasing food production, after over 100 countries endorsed many FAO-led initiatives at the 13th conference of the parties to the UN Convention to Combat Drought and Desertification (UNCCD).
