Soils with a thick,
blackish topsoil, rich in organic matter with a calcareous subsoil.
Distribution
Chernozems cover
approximately 230 million hectares, on the cooler mid-latitude steppes and prairies of
Eurasia and North America. They occur mainly on lössial parent materials. Associated
soils are Luvisols, Phaeozems and Kastanozems.
