The objective of the Water Quality and Environment Programme is concerned with agricultural drainage management and water quality improvement in the sustainable use and conservation of water in agriculture. Water development and management needs are focused on drainage of irrigated land to reduce waterlogging and soil salinization, conserve water by safe reuse of treated wastewater, mitigate health hazards related to water pollution and water resources development, and improve agricultural water management to attain a level of quality that is appropriate for different uses. The programme also endeavours to help build and strengthen data on treated wastewater reuse, water quality, and sharing of information and dialogues among stakeholders.
