The mission of the Department of Biological and Irrigation Engineering (BIE) is to provide education for and about biological engineering, the application of engineering principles and the science of biology to the solution of bioresource problems. In conformation with Utah State University's unique role as Utah's land-grant university, the program of the department of biological and irrigation engineering integrates teaching, research, extension, and service in the education process. The goal of the department is to provide students with broad-based engineering skills necessary to solve bioresource problems. Students first learn to integrate biological sciences with conventional studies in mathematics and chemistry. These skills are broadened with a liberal exposure to humanities and social sciences, then sharpened with the study of engineering topics to: Develop practical problem-solving and communication abilities that will contribute to biological engineering practice, advance knowledge, and contribute to society; Expand a professional sensitivity to the economic, social, and legal dimensions of technical problems in order that engineering solutions are more holistic and applicable; Stimulate a desire for life-long learning, adaptation, and use as one means of extending engineering knowledge. |
