Partners - International Commission on Irrigation and Drainage (ICID)

The International Commission on Irrigation and Drainage (ICID) had a relevant importance in IPTRID's creation in 1990, together with the World Bank and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP).
This central function is evident in ICID role within IPTRID's government structure; ICID is member of:

1. IPTRID's Management Committee (MC), responsible for overseeing the implementation of the work programme by the Secretariat and for advising the Programme Manager on technical and management actions;

2. ICID - IPTRID Advisory Committee (AC), having the role to advise the Consultative Group (CG), Management Committee (MC) and the Secretariat on technical aspects and to promote collaboration between IPTRID and ICID national committees.

Collaboration with ICID WG-CBTE (Working Group on Capacity Building, Training and Education):

On the occasion of the 55th IEC and Inter-regional Conference (Moscow, Russian Federation, 5-11 September 2004), a workshop on Capacity needs assessment on agricultural water management was successfully conducted jointly between IPTRID / FAO and the ICID working group on “Capacity Building, Training and Education” (DFID funded). Five papers were presented including different case studies in developing countries. This workshop marked the first step of a series of activities that are expected to result in an ICID-FAO-IPTRID guideline manual on capacity needs assessment to be published in 2006.

Collaboration with ICID Italian national committee (ITALICID):

In February 2005 the Secretary General of ITALICID and the Programme Manager of IPTRID met in Rome to discuss ways to develop joint activities. Several points of interest were identified, including stepping up and facilitating exchange of information through their respective web pages, the development of "indicators" to identify gender participation in irrigation in the Mediterranean region, exploring development of a joint project proposal and subsequently seeking funding for improved irrigated agriculture in Ethiopia, and to join hands in producing a paper on the status of irrigated agriculture in Italy. Initially, both parties agreed to start with the latter activity ("The availability of water resources and its use in Agriculture, in Italy") and to find ways on how to move forward on the others.
