Research Uptake and Exchange of Technology in Irrigation and Drainage

A Phased Approach

Formulating sustainable regional, national and sub-national agricultural water management strategies within their poverty reduction programmes will be implemented according to the following steps:

Select areas for intervention (region, country, watershed, etc.);

Make an assessment of the existing situation and trends relating to priority agricultural water management issues and produce assessment studies;

Stimulate participatory work to reach consensus and create ownership through the organisation of workshops and task forces;

Assist countries and development agencies in the production of strategy documents and programmes, outlining priority actions, with a focus on the strengthening of capacities;

Assist countries to produce identification reports for specific projects which have been identified within these strategies;

Assist countries to produce project documents for submission to donors;

Assist countries to implement these projects through supervision and evaluation;

Support the above activities with an information system on existing resources and expertise in agricultural water management; and

Maintain and develop the coherence of the IPTRID Programme with an efficient management system.
