Research Uptake, Exchange of Technology and Management Innovations in Irrigation and Drainage

Publications

IPTRID has disseminated its publications widely to researchers and practitioners in irrigation and drainage through its own and FAO international networks. Some have been broad in scope and dealing with policy issues while others have been more specific and detailed addressing particular problems. All publications have been aimed at strengthening capacity in technology transfer and applied research.

IPTRID's publications are herein presented, grouped into six main types:

GRID - The Network Magazine, produced six-monthly, aiming to improve the exchange of information among researchers and between researchers and practitioners.

Issues Papers (IP) - Brief discussion papers on general topics in irrigation and drainage, aiming to create awareness among the interested public and the professional community on these issues.

Knowledge Synthesis (KS) reports - Technical reports resulted from a synthesis activity having the objective of making available new knowledge to researches and practitioners in irrigation as well as avoiding that important information and experience is lost over time.

Events Publications (EP) - Material generated through IPTRID-support or derived from IPTRID-staff participations in events (proceedings, articles, leaflets, brochures, etc.).

Project Reports (PR) - Material related to all phases of IPTRID projects: identification, formulation, implementation, progress, monitoring, evaluation and technical-related.

IPTRID Programme Reporting (IPR) - Publications related to promotion, governance, management, monitoring and evaluation of activities undertaken by the Programme.

Copies of publications can be requested by contacting the IPTRID Secretariat and sending your name, address and organization. A copy in pdf format can be downloaded where indicated.

Publications here listed are those published after 1998, when IPTRID became a Special Programme of FAO. Former publications are available in hardcopy, and can be requested by contacting the IPTRID Secretariat.

GRID

GRID Network magazine is produced by IPTRID Secretariat and published by FAO on a six-month basis regularly since 1992. It represents IPTRID's flag publication. It aims to improve the exchange of information among researchers and between researchers and practitioners, providing news on recent innovations in irrigation and drainage, notable research results and updates on IPTRID's activities.

Issues Papers

Issues Papers consist in brief discussion papers on general topics concerning the irrigation and drainage sector. The aim is to create awareness among the interested public and the professional community of irrigation and drainage issues, particularly of the positive benefits of irrigated agriculture. The targeted readership is thus planners, senior managers and general public.

IPTRID. 2007.

IPTRID. 2005. Agricultural trade liberalization. Implications for irrigated agriculture, by Cornish, G.A. & Fernandez, S. Issue Paper 5. Rome.
The paper aims at providing background information for further identification of the challenges faced by irrigated agriculture within the context of trade liberalization, in different countries. The paper concludes by identifying possible role for organizations such as IPTRID to carry out or facilitate research for quantifying the opportunities and threats bearing on the irrigated production systems of individual nations as a consequence of trade liberalization.

IPTRID. 2003. The irrigation challenge. Increasing irrigation contribution to food security through higher water productivity from canal irrigation systems, by Plusquellec, H. Issue Paper 4. FAO. Rome.
This paper discusses some reasons why the contribution of irrigated agriculture to food and fibre production has continued to increase. The shortages of food production forecasted for the 1990s were averted due to the massive exploitation of groundwater and adoption of improved water saving management practices. Over-exploitation of groundwater and the consequent decline in water quality has occurred in many developing countries particularly in the semi-arid regions. Management practices must change in order to resolve these problems and better serve the farming community.

IPTRID. 2001. Drainage and sustainability, by Pearce, G. & Denecke, W. Issue Paper 3. FAO. Rome.
The purpose of this paper is to promote recognition of the crucial contribution that land drainage can make towards sustainable agriculture by reducing the negative effects of irrigation (e.g. land degradation and salinization) and by improving rural health conditions. Moreover, it emphasizes the need for higher investment in land-drainage projects. Drainage role in the agricultural sector is considered in three major climate types: arid and semi-arid areas, humid and sub-humid tropics and temperate zones.

IPTRID. June 1999. Realizing the value of irrigation system maintenance, by Skutsch, J. & Evans, D. Issue Paper 2. FAO. Rome.
This paper aims to show that maintenance of irrigated schemes is economically more efficient than the cycle of system decline, under-funded restoration and early rehabilitation that often prevails, and how it can sustain the proper functioning of the infrastructure. It also identifies the issues that need to be addressed if the effectiveness of maintenance is to be improved.

IPTRID. January 1999. Poverty reduction and irrigated agriculture, by Hasnip, N. & Vincent, L. & Hussein, K. Issue Paper 1. FAO. Rome.
This paper aims to show how the means to reduce poverty lies in the socio-economic conditions that irrigated agriculture can change and in the way irrigation development is pursued.

Knowledge Synthesis reports

Knowledge Synthesis reports represent the outcome of a synthesis activity, having the objective of making available new knowledge to researches and practitioners in irrigation as well as avoiding that important information and experience is lost over time. They are technical reports on a particular subject which is relevant to IPTRID mission.

IPTRID. 2002. Biodrainage. Principles, experiences and application, by Heuperman, A.F. & Kapoor, A.S. & Denecke, H.W. IPTRID Knowledge Synthesis Report No. 6. FAO. Rome.
This publication is a compilation of existing information (both formally published and unpublished literature) on biodrainage, which consists in removing the excess of water through vegetation, rather than mechanically. The report aims to inform water professionals in general and drainage experts in particular of current knowledge of biodrainage and further research need.

IPTRID. August 2001. Guidelines for benchmarking performance in the irrigation and drainage sector, by Malano, H. & Burton, M. IPTRID Knowledge Synthesis Report No. 5. FAO. Rome.
