2. Kagera Transboundary Agroecosystem Management Programme

FAO as executing agency is in the final stages of development of the full GEF/UNEP project with the support of country teams in Rwanda, Tanzania and Uganda, for review and submission to the GEF Council meeting in June 2006. During the project steering committee meeting at the end of November 2005 it was agreed that Burundi should be a full project beneficiary. GEF/UNEP has since informed FAO that the GEF Secretariat has tentatively indicated that an additional US$1 million could be solicited due to this large expansion of the project, bringing the GEF earmarked funds to US$ 7 million and required cofunding US$ 24 million including in kind resources. The next PSC meeting is scheduled for 13 February 2006 in Kigali for country review and approval of the draft project document and implementation and co-funding arrangements. FAO invites any suggestions of collaboration for project implementation and co-funding support. The project website has been recently updated with documents from the consultations among beneficiary countries and stakeholders during the workshops on Regional experience sharing and Project formulation, held in Entebbe from 23 - 29 November 2005. .. more...

4. Water Report 29 - Irrigation in Africa in figures: AQUASTAT Survey – 2005

AQUASTAT, FAO’s global information system on water and agriculture, was initiated in 1993 with a view to presenting a comprehensive picture of water resources and irrigation in developing countries and providing systematic, up-to-date and reliable information on water for agriculture and rural development. Water Report 29 presents the results of the most recent survey carried out in the 53 countries of Africa , and it analyses the changes that have occurred in the ten years since the first survey (Water Report 7). Following the AQUASTAT methodology, the survey relied as much as possible on country-based statistics and information. A general summary presents a synopsis on water resources development, irrigation and drainage in Africa . The CD-ROM accompanying this report contains detailed profiles on the situation in each country. The report and country profiles are accessible online. Contact: Karen.Frenken@fao.org

6. WHO/FAO Guidelines for the safe use of wastewater, excreta and greywater

A joint collaboration between FAO and WHO, the newly revised WHO guidelines for the safe use of wastewater, excreta and greywater will be available in print in March 2006. Volumes 2 and 4 on Wastewater Use in Agriculture and Excreta and Greywater Use in Agriculture address health-based guidelines for irrigating crops with reclaimed wastewater that would be protective as well as adaptive to what is locally available and achievable. New opportunities in identifying wastewater as a resource for water scarce regions and in pro-poor agricultural development, particularly in peri-urban areas, are illustrated with best practices in minimizing health risks. In addition, the interface between wastewater use and poverty in the political context and international development targets is mentioned with expanded sections on risk analysis/management, revised microbial guideline values and further elaboration of chemical contaminants, health impact assessment, and wastewater use planning strategies at sub-national levels. 7. IPNIS: Integrated Plant Nutrition Information System

IPNIS is a database providing a collection of data on crop-wise plant nutrients management at administrative (district) level, supported by relevant information on soil and soil management, agro-ecological zones, and crop production constraints. In this database application, one can find crops grown at different locations, their yields and cropping practices. More importantly, the actual fertilization practiced by the farmers along with the extension service recommendations and research findings, where available, can be found. The main objective of the database is to provide researchers, extension officers, decision-makers and other stakeholders working in the area of agricultural development with information that is not only a prerequisite for providing farmers with appropriate advice on nutrient management, but also providing background information for policy and strategy formulations for improved plant nutrients use, demand forecasting, and formulation of agricultural production oriented field programmes. more...
