ANNOUNCEMENTS

1. Training Workshop on “Project Design and Management for Professionals in the Water Sector”, 18-22 November 2006, Sana'a, Yemen

As part of its regional initiative to enhance the Capacity of Professionals in the Water Sector, the International Programme for Technology and Research in Irrigation and Drainage (IPTRID) jointly with the German Agency for Technical Cooperation (GTZ) are organizing a training workshop on “Project Design and Management” in Sana'a, Yemen, from 18 to 22 November 2006. The workshop is the fourth leg of a Training Programme on the subject conducted previously in Egypt , Syria and Jordan and addressed to middle-to-senior level staff from Ministries and Authorities in connection with water issues.

The objective of the Training Programme is to effectively enhance the knowledge and skills of professionals in the water sector throughout the project management cycle, from preparation to delivery, by means of five-day face-to-face training workshops in the respective countries. It also includes an online resource forum that will help increase knowledge and awareness of participants so that they are able to share experience with colleagues and representatives of partner institutions. The web resource is currently password protected allowing only participants from the four countries to access and join a moderated discussion on key aspects of project design and management. Following completion of the training programme, the online resource will be open to the public.

DATABASES AND ON-LINE RESOURCES

6. The Somalia Water and Land Information Management (SWALIM) web site

The Somalia Water and Land Information Management (SWALIM) project, implemented by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) and funded by the European Commission and UNICEF, has launched its web site. The web site is one of the most important components of the project’s Client Service Platform, giving online access to users around the world to a large and increasing amount of SWALIM’s electronic information products on water and land. Besides keeping people informed about what SWALIM is doing and up to date with its news and events, the web site hosts a growing array of electronic information assets on water and land – reports, publications, maps – that can be found and downloaded using AGRIS, the FAO-developed International Information System for the Agricultural Sciences and Technology, as its search engine. Additionally the web site offers tools and utilities to query SWALIM’s datasets to extract data meaningful to the user and produce reports. The design of the web site makes for fast-loading pages and minimal scrolling. Contact: Zoltan Balint at SWALIM or Karen Frenken at FAO.

7. Irrigation Equipment Supply (IES) database

The Water Resources, Development and Management Service of FAO and the International Programme for Technology and Research in Irrigation and Drainage (IPTRID) jointly support the Irrigation Equipment Supply (IES) database. This tool, developed as part of FAO's mandate to provide information on irrigation, seeks to establish an up-to-date list of Suppliers/Manufacturers providing specific irrigation equipment worldwide.

Over the period March-May 2006, IES underwent an upgrading process with the objective to facilitate database query and allow Suppliers/Manufacturers to autonomously subscribe and update their information. To asses the effectiveness of these improvements, a survey was carried out in June-July 2006. A summary of the results is available in the web site.

Further improvements of the database have been carried out, taking into consideration the major issues arising from the survey. Among others, figures summarising IES current situation (in terms of number of Suppliers/Manufacturers, regional and country distribution, items provided) will be soon available. Moreover, the list of irrigation equipments has been widened, in order to meet users’ and Suppliers’/Manufacturers’ needs.

Please, visit the new Irrigation Equipment Supply (IES) database. For any comment and suggestion, please contact IES administrator
