Emergency Centre for Transboundary Animal Diseases in Liberia - (ECTAD)

The publication provides the mid-term performance review of FAO Liberia’s Country Programming Framework (CPF) 2020–2023. The review consists of introduction of the country context, situational analysis, performance analysis, and conclusion. The analysis was made according to the four CPF outputs and 21 strategic actions (SAs) across the outputs.

Guidelines to support the national agricultural research strategy of Liberia

Based on the lessons drawn from the implemented agricultural research for development (AR4D) assessment methodology, including desk review analysis and participatory discussions held with various actors and experts familiar with the National Agricultural Research Systems (NARS) of Liberia, the guidelines are proposed to strengthen the knowledge and skills of researchers and AR4D project managers within the various NARS organizations in the country.

Project to Enhance Animal Feed Production through Maize Production in Liberia - TCP/LIR/3703

The project aimed to enhance and sustain maize production in order to provide consistent and affordable sources of corn for feed production, hence increasing the profit margins of both feed producers and poultry farmers, as well as the viability of domestic chicken production. With more competitive farmers, local production of affordable fresh eggs and meat can generate sustainable livelihoods and enhance food and nutrition security in Liberia.

The publication is meant to regularly disseminate information on FAO Liberia's programmes, interventions and partnerships and to strengthen awareness of and support for the key action areas within the country's agrifood systems. The targeted audience includes the general public and all the current and potential partners.

Legal report on the ecosystem approach to fisheries in Liberia

The present legal report on the Ecosystem Approach to Fisheries (EAF) used the diagnostic tool to assess the alignment of selected policy and legal instruments of Liberia with the EAF. This assessment analysed the extent to which 82 EAF legal requirements, which are considered the minimum standards in legislating for the EAF, are reflected in Liberia's policies and legislation relevant to the fisheries sector of the country and other relevant sectors (such as environment, wildlife, ecosystems, and maritime affairs). Based on this preliminary diagnosis, gaps were identified in the assessed instruments, and recommendations were made for improving the implementation of the EAF.

A practical guide on safe hookah diving- Diving for sea cucumbers and other marine organisms

This guide aims at providing fishers, as well as fishery extension officers, with a tool to acquire the basic knowledge needed to carry out hookah diving safely. Through simple language and numerous illustrations, the guide describes the basic rules of diving, the potential risks associated with this activity and what to do to minimize them, as well as other useful tips to improve hookah diving operations. The guide, however, is not intended as a comprehensive manual for commercial divers. Rather, it is strongly recommended that fishers who want to engage in hookah or SCUBA diving receive appropriate training by a qualified diving instructor.

Food security and food safety are major challenges for consumers and producers in Liberia, as productivity continues to fall below regional levels, while handling and safety measures are not in place Microbiological and chemical contamination in food is a major cause of illnesses Food borne diseases not only pose significant threats to consumer health, they can also cause serious human suffering and economic damage In this regard, risk analysis has become an integral part in ensuring food safety.

Improved Regional Fisheries Governance in Selected CECAF Countries - TCP/RAF/3709

Fisheries is an important sector that contributes a considerable amount to the food security and national economies of coastal West African countries, with fish being the primary source of protein for 25 percent of the population Fishery products are also a source of income and employment for more than seven million people in the region Belhabib et al 2015 However, due to overfishing and illegal fishing, estimated at 40 percent of all fish captured between 2012 and 2015 fish stocks are rapidly declining, thereby jeopardizing food security in the region.

Liberia | Data in Emergencies Monitoring brief – round 3: Results and recommendations, April 2022

This Data in Emergencies Monitoring (DIEM-Monitoring) brief shares the results of a third-round field assessment conducted between September and October 2021 in Liberia. It presents key findings and recommendations for humanitarian actors to utilize in planning and implementing data-driven programming to sustain farmers’ livelihoods and build their resilience to future shocks – protecting the food security of Liberia's rural people.

Comprehensive assessment of national agricultural research and extension systems with a special focus on institutional linkages between various actors in Liberia

As part of the efforts of FAO to support and strengthen National Agricultural Research Systems (NARS)’ research impacts and their links to extension service systems, the present assessment was conducted in Liberia to establish deeper insight into these challenges and opportunities. The results presented in this comprehensive report can be used to support the development and adoption of guidelines for use by the NARS. The present study was undertaken to assess the implementation of AR4D in Liberia and the key actors involved to better understand the performance and the intuitional linkages amongst them and other relevant institutions to help identify potentials for fulfilling the agricultural research for development needs of the country with the over-arching goal of supporting small-scale farmers.

Strengthening the institutional linkages between national agricultural research systems actors and improving agricultural research for development in Liberia

This policy brief has been developed to offer specific key-recommendations and lessons learned, which the Government of Liberia could consider for strengthening its support to the National Agricultural Research Systems (NARS) of the country. Ultimately, the recommendations are intended to ensure efficient adoption of the proposed methodologies for enhancing the impact of the AR4D efforts of the NARS in Liberia.

The project aimed to support the implementation of the Agreement on Port State Measures (PSMA) and complementary instruments, to combat Illegal, Unreported and Unregulated (IUU) fishing and secure sustainable small scale fisheries and enhance maritime security in Liberia and Sierra Leone.

Strengthening the enabling environment for responsible investment in agriculture and food systems: Evidence from Liberia

Under its CFS Responsible Agricultural Investment (RAI) Umbrella Programme, FAO is strengthening the capacities of Liberian state and non-state actors to enhance the enabling environment for responsible investment in agriculture and food systems. Youth represent more than half of the population of Liberia and can play a critical role in the future of agriculture, however they need support to unlock their potential. Support to Statistics and Information Management Systems of the Ministry of Agriculture (MOA) in Liberia - TCP/LIB/3602

The aim of the project was to support statistics and information management systems by strengthening the institutional capacity of MoA to provide, manage and sustain a reliable database on agricultural performance The strengthening of the Statistics Unit in the Department of Planning and Development of MoA would ensure reliable and timely statistics for evidence based planning, policy formulation and decision making, as well as allowing timely access and availability of reliable data, baselines and statistics to guide and support the planning and programming processes of partners, including the Government.

Reinforcing Social Cohesion and Peace in Côte d’Ivoire and Liberia - UNO/LIR/021/MIL

FAO, the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and United Nations Mission in Liberia (UNMIL) developed this project to promote the stabilization and cohesion of 10 communities along the Côte d’Ivoire-Liberia borders in Grand Gedeh and Nimba counties. The project focused on implementing joint sociocultural and economic activities and identifying the main drivers of conflict in concession areas and communities that rely on natural resources.

Increasing Resilience to Climate Change in Liberia - UNTS/LIR/018/GEF

The objective of the project was to promote technological options for farmers that would increase productivity and farmers’ resilience to the negative impacts of climate-related changes. As a result of the project, the resilience of eight piloted rural poor agriculture-dependent communities in two counties was boosted and their vulnerability to climate change reduced.

The State of Food Security and Nutrition in the World 2018

For the third year in a row, there has been a rise in world hunger. The absolute number of undernourished people, i.e. those facing chronic food deprivation, has increased to nearly 821 million in 2017, from around 804 million in 2016. These are levels from almost a decade ago. This report monitors progress towards the targets of ending both hunger (SDG Target 2.1) and all forms of malnutrition (SDG Target 2.2), and provides an analysis of the underlying causes and drivers of observed trends.

Halting the spread of disease and helping livestock farmers in Liberia - TCP/LIR/3504

The project was implemented in response to an outbreak in four counties of Liberia of Pestedes PetitsRuminants(PPR) or Sheep and Goat Plague, a devastating disease affecting small ruminants. A widespread vaccination programme was put in place, awareness raised on ways of stopping the spread of the disease and the resilience of farmers strengthened.
