For 15 weeks, 30 Katjang female goats, initially 12.3 ñ 1.9 kg, were given diets of elephant grass (Pennisetum purpureum) ad libitum, elephant grass ad libitum plus concentrate restricted to 25, 50, 75 or 100% of ad libitum intake or plus leucaena restricted to 25, 50, 75 or 100% of ad libitum intake. Goats given 100% elephant grass lost weight (-19 g/day). Liveweight gains increased and elephant grass intake decreased with increasing intakes of leucaena or concentrate. Maximum liveweight gains were 76 g/day with concentrate ad libitum and 43 g/day with leucaena ad libitum and the corresponding feed conversion ratios were 6.3 and 12.9, respectively.
