Fresh foliage of Gliricidia maculata, Leucaena leucocephala and Sesbania grandiflora was added to chopped Pennisetum purpureum diets for growing male Kacang goats. There were no differences between legumes in effect on intake, digestibility and liveweight gain from P. purpureum. Total DM intake and DE did not differ between control and supplemented diets. Supplementation improved mineral provision, av. daily liveweight gain (ADG) and increased N uptake from 0.83 to 0.93 g/kg, whereas apparent digestibility of DM, cell wall constituents, N, P and Ca was not affected. Similar increases in DM intake and ADG were found in a trial comparing legume-N and N from formaldehyde-treated soyabean meal. From in situ studies, water-soluble N and rumen-acid pepsin-insoluble N averaged 52 and 29% for P. purpureum and 37 and 14% for the legumes, resp.
