Tropical-Animal-Production. 1985, 10: 1, 39-43; 10 ref. A goat fitted with a rumen fistula was given fresh Leucaena leucocephala for 6 weeks and then 3 kg fresh leucaena daily for 3 weeks. Concentration of 3-hydroxy-4 (IH)-pyridone (DHP) in urine was 0.7 g/100 ml on first day of feeding, 0.2 g on second day and 0.03 g after 20 days. Mimosine in urine was 0.03 g/100 ml during 3 weeks. After giving leucaena for 6 weeks only 5 to 15% total mimosine ingested was recovered in urine and faeces. Degradation in vitro of DHP was faster with rumen microorganisms from a goat given leucaena compared with one not given leucaena, 87 and 57% DHP lost in 9 h, respectively.
