 | Abstract 608 Leucaena leucocephala - its use and limitations for animal production.Hulman,-B; Naseeven,-MR; Mapoon,-LK; Teeluck,-JP Animal Production Division, Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Natural Resources, Reduit, Mauritius. Tropical-VeterinaryJournal. 1983, 1: 1, 97-102; 29 ref. After a review of the use of Leucaena leucocephala in diets for livestock in Mauritius, it is concluded that it can be used sparingly in diets for beef cattle to produce liveweight gains of about 700 g daily but its potential in diets for dairy cows has yet to be established. Toxicity of L. leucocephala does not seem to be a problem in Mauritius, perhaps because of husbandry practices which limit its intake to 5% of liveweight. L. leucocephala has also been used in diets for sheep, giving daily gains of 110-125 g. This abstract relates to the following species:Leucaena leucocephala
