Mixtures of mature elephant grass and C. ensiformis forage were treated with NaOH and used to measure the pattern and extent of rumen fermentation in fistulated sheep and as a basal diet for growing cattle. DM fermentation of the forage mixture in sheep, measured by nylon bags in the rumen, was increased substantially by NaOH; zero time solubility increased from 29 to 38%, digestibility over 48 h from 62 to 76% and time to digest half the DM decreased from 31 to 21 h
