March 22nd marked UN-Water World Water Day 2012. As the coordinating agency for this year’s World Water Day, The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations hosted special events in New York City and at its Headquarters in Rome, Italy.
In New York, FAO participated in the Twelfth Infopoverty World Conference, themed “Who drives the digital revolution? Development through innovation.” FAO discussed sustainable water use, water resources for food and agriculture, water management, and how information and communication technologies (ICTs) are critical tools in the fight for water and food security.
Later on in the evening, FAO addressed a World Water Day special event, “From World Water Day 2012 on the theme ‘Water and food security’ to the International Year of Water Cooperation 2013” together with UN-Water, where FAO co-sponsored the side-event organized by the Tajikistan Mission in New York. Examined was the need for water security in sufficient quantity and adequate quality, the relationship between a lack of access to water and malnutrition, the impact of climate change on water resources, and the gender gap in agriculture.
