Market incentives and disincentives analysis for Malawi underway

The MAFAP team, in collaboration with a national team of consultants, is currently analyzing the market incentives and disincentives Malawian farmers face for a selected number of crops. The commodities that are being analyzed include some of the most important agricultural products of Malawi, including but not limited to maize, cassava, potato, tobacco and tea. The analysis will result in technical notes, policy briefs and a Malawi country report later this year.

This work and related outputs will support the Government of Malawi and its development partners in strengthening food and agricultural policies in order to ascertain that these policies are fully  supportive of agricultural development. The information generated by the MAFAP project will also be an important input  for an enhanced policy dialogue at country level.

Collaboration at country level

At country level, MAFAP has established contacts with the Malawi Ministry of Agriculture, Irrigation and Water Development and with the Centre for Agricultural Research and Development at Bunda College. For data collection and analysis, MAFAP is supported by the ANARMAC consortium, a consultancy specialized in policy analysis, monitoring and evaluation. Collaboration with key development partners and stakeholders is currently being strengthened in order to raise awareness and strengthen ties between MAFAP and food security related projects already ongoing.
