Join the Food Coalition virtual launch event

FAO is launching a Global Alliance to prevent the COVID health crisis from becoming a food crisis

03/11/2020

On 5 November 2020, from 12.30 to 14.30hrs, FAO Director-General, Dr QU Dongyu, will host a virtual High-Level event launching the Food Coalition. This dialogue will call for international cooperation and concrete, coordinated and joint global actions to strengthen food systems in the context of COVID-19.

In a remarkably short period of time, COVID-19 has reached every part of the world. Countries are struggling to contain the effects of the pandemic, which pose major threats to lives as well as livelihoods. A coordinated global response is urgent in order to avoid the health crisis becoming a food security crisis.

690 million people were already hungry in 2019, and COVID-19 is pushing between 83 and 132 million more people into hunger in 2020. This crisis is also deteriorating the nutritional status of the most vulnerable.

New thinking is needed to enhance our ability to survive a prolonged cycle of pandemic outbreak and economic shock.
