High-level event commemorating the Fifth Anniversary of the Paris Agreement

09/12/2020

On the occasion of the fifth anniversary of the Paris Agreement, the event will highlight the key role of the agricultural sectors in supporting the Paris Agreement. The Paris Agreement, with a primary focus on limiting the rise of global temperatures, also directly recognizes the “fundamental priority of safeguarding food security and ending hunger, and the particular vulnerabilities of food production systems to the impacts of climate change”.

This fully reflects FAO’s support to countries and its leading role in advocating for food security and sustainable agriculture in the face of climate change and presents an opportunity to re-emphasize the vital links between climate change, food security and agriculture. The event, co-hosted by the FAO and France, will call for greater climate action and ambition in the agricultural sectors to limit global warming to 1.5°C.

Discussion will showcase how FAO works with key country partners to advance international discussions on agriculture and climate change, particularly since the adoption of the Koronivia Joint Work on Agriculture in 2017 which put agriculture at the centre of the international climate agenda, and will underscore the critical role of multilateral processes and climate governance as countries rebuild after COVID-19.
