Field programme

In 2005, there were an estimated 150 FAO field projects related to sustainable mountain development underway in Africa, Asia, Latin America, the Near East and Eastern Europe.

These field projects are improving the lives and livelihood opportunities of mountain people and enhancing the sustainable development of mountain areas through:
  • promoting integrated watershed development and water resource management.
  • encouraging mountain forestry and sustainable resource management.
  • improving policies and laws for sustainable mountain development.
  • fostering capacity-building and institutional strengthening.
  • improving economics and employment, as well as small-scale enterprise development in mountain areas, with a special focus on promoting high-quality mountain products.
  • conserving mountain biodiversity.
  • mainstreaming gender in agriculture and rural development.
  • preserving and strengthening indigenous knowledge systems.
  • promoting inland capture fisheries and aquaculture in mountain areas.
