Normative work
The scope of FAO's normative work related to sustainable mountain development is broad and extensive and includes:
  • documenting best practices in sustainable mountain development.
  • investigating food insecurity and malnutrition in mountain areas and carrying out vulnerability assessments.
  • strengthening mountain populations' livelihoods with improved policies for sustainable agriculture and rural development
  • forging alliances between partners dedicated to improving the lives of mountain people and protecting mountain environments around the world.
  • devising technical guidelines, methodologies and tools for watershed management and conservation.
  • charting trends in mountain legislation and assisting countries improve mountain policies and laws.
  • ensuring the sustainable management and utilization of non-wood forest products.
  • improving forest policies and strategies on poverty alleviation and food security.
  • strengthening communication, information and research networks.
  • promoting inland capture fisheries and aquaculture in mountain areas.
  • encouraging conservation agriculture and soil conservation practices in mountain areas.
  • developing a global database on ecosystem monitoring in mountain regions.
  • promoting technologies for mountain agriculture.
  • mainstreaming gender and population issues in agricultural, environmental and rural development policies, legislation, programmes and projects.
  • strengthening local institutional capacities for disaster preparedness and prevention in high-risk areas.
  • encouraging the protection and promotion of high-quality mountain products to improve mountain livelihoods.
