18/10/2019

On the occasion of World Food Day, FAO Mongolia organized “Kids’ interactive session on healthy diet” for 100 elementary school children between the age of 8-9 at School #5 in Ulaanbaatar on 17 October 2019. Developing healthy eating behavior and providing them with appropriate knowledge from young age is key to maintain wellbeing of oneself in the future. Therefore, UN FAO in Mongolia office takes the initiative to act and collaborate with Mongolian Dietetics Association to reach out to younger generation.

The session involed several interactive tools such as food plates, models of refrigerator, flash cards and digestive system aprons that gives them opportunity to practice what they have learnt and attract their attention. Children were happy to play and learn how to categorize food items into different groups and learn about the appropriate refrigerator section for different types of food and how food travels in the digestion system in the human body.

At the end of the session children were very happy and expressed how they felt about the session. N.Irmuun, 4th grade student from school #5  highlighted "I enjoyed a lot today and I have learnt about types of diaries and digestion of food in human body."

And Z.Khulanjin said "I learnt that eggs should not be kept in the side door of the refrigerator, because it opens a lot and eggs are at risk of quickly spoiled. Tomato, garlic and banana should not be kept in the refrigerator, instead they should be kept in room temperature. Foods are categorized into 5 different groups such as dairy, meat, grains, vegetables and fruits. And I learnt that it is healthy that we reduce salt consumption." FAO Mongolia will continue the inititiative to work with youth.
