MRI Scoping Workshop and Networking Event

Chamonix-Mont-Blanc, France
From: 15.06.2018 to: 15.06.2018

The Mountain Research Initiative (MRI) will be holding the Scoping Workshop and Networking Event “An agenda for sustainable mountaineering: research needs, projects and partnership opportunities” on 15 June 2018 in Chamonix-Mont-Blanc, France to discuss sustainable mountaineering through research needs, projects and partnership opportunities.

The Sustainable Summits Conference 2018 (SSC 2018), to be held on 12-16 June 2018, invites communities in scientific research, practitioners, public and private sectors, mountaineers and the general public, to reflect on and debate some of the key questions around the sustainability of mountaineering and mountain tourism and recreation, particularly in the context of global change in mountain environments. Topics regarding the role of high mountains in society, climate change and human impacts, among others, will be discussed to address concrete actions.

Following the SSC 2018, the MRI, with the participating support from the International Climbing and Mountaineering Federation, International Federation of Mountain Guide Associations, GRID-Ardenal, United Nations Environment Programme and the Petzl Foundation, is convening a Scoping Workshop and Networking Event to:

1. provide an opportunity for continued dialogue and exploration of issues and ideas presented at the SCC 2018;
2. facilitate a platform to address other open questions and avenues for joint knowledge production and action on mountaineering's contribution to sustainable mountain development;
3. foster existing and establish new connections through networking with individuals from diverse communities, spanning scientific research, practitioners in the public and private sectors, as well as professional and amateur mountaineers; and
4. spawn ideas and avenues for future research and project collaborations, networks and working groups on global change research in the context of mountaineering tourism and recreation.

The deadline to register is 27 May 2018.
