Mountain Futures 2018

Yunnan, China
From: 04.06.2018 to: 08.06.2018

In March 2016, stakeholders from 35 countries established the Mountain Futures Initiative, as part of the inaugural Mountain Futures Conference in Kunming, China. The initiative seeks to foster local innovations for resilient livelihoods in mountain regions worldwide; it aims to identify, develop and scale up mountain-based solutions to global problems.

In 2017, the World Agroforestry Centre and Kunming Institute of Botany joined with the Chinese Academy of Sciences, Chinese Academy of Agricultural Sciences and the Government of China to give the initiative a 200-hectare physical home in Honghe, Yunnan. The Mountain Futures Site will host several projects, including the large-scale replication of environmental conditions in global mountain regions, mushroom domestication and cultivation, China-Africa sustainable trade of plant resources, and smart monitoring of ecosystem health.

This year in June, the Centre for Mountain Ecosystem Studies will host the second international Mountain Futures Conference. Mountain Futures 2018 will offer unique opportunities to participate in and shape the new activities of the Mountain Futures Initiative, and continue knowledge and innovation-sharing for all with interests in mountain regions.

The conference will be structured around three themes, including:
• Ecosystem rhythms: understanding change;
• Land systems: managing complexity; and
• Sustaining livelihoods: role of gender and local institutions.

The programme of the conference features a field trip to Honghe for the launch of the Mountain Futures Site, the Kunming Open Science Conference, high-level leadership panels and an international mountain film festival.
