Lucerne World Mountain Conference

Lucerne, Switzerland
From: 11.10.2011 to:

Mountain Partnership Event

Twenty years on from the first “Earth Summit” (Rio 1992) and in preparation to the upcoming Rio+20 Summit (June 2012), a World Mountain Conference was convened within the framework of the Mountain Partnership from 11 to 12 October 2011 in Lucerne, Switzerland. The main organizers of the event were the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation (SDC) and the Swiss Federal Office for Spatial Development (ARE). With more than 100 participants representing governments, non-governmental organizations, academia, civil society, politics, business and the United Nations system, the two-day conference was intended to help mountains stand tall on the Rio+20 agenda, said Dr Daniel Maselli from the SDC.

Featuring open space discussions with international leading experts of environment and sustainable development, the Conference directly linked mountains to green economy and institutional frameworks, namely the two key themes of Rio+20. On this occasion, a number of reports focusing on different mountain regions worldwide were prepared and discussed, with the aim to assess progress achieved in Sustainable Mountain Development from Rio 1992. Mountains are trans-boundary and interdisciplinary, said Brice Lalonde, former Minister for Environment in France and Executive Coordinator for Rio+20. Therefore, the mountain voice must speak out in the context of international negotiations on water, energy, food security, planet monitoring, social issues and risk preparedness.

A crucial outcome of the global conference is the Call for Action, which was prepared by the Conference Secretariat based on the discussions and inputs received by participants and experts. It is available at the following links in EnglishSpanishFrench. This Mountains for the World: Call for Action will also provide guidance in responding to the invitation from the UNCSD Rio+20 Second Preparatory Committee to provide inputs and contributions in writing by 1 November 2011 for inclusion in a compilation document to serve as basis for the preparation of zero draft of the outcome document.
