UNFCCC COP22 and Mountain Partnership side events

Marrakech, Morocco
From: 07.11.2016 to: 18.11.2016

At the 22nd Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC COP22), also known as the Marrakech Climate Change Conference, on 7-18 November 2016, nations of the world will continue their work on strengthening the global response to the threat of climate change, with the central focus placed on enhancing ambition, promoting implementation and providing support. Strengthening action on mitigation and adaptation by all Parties before 2020, governments will make concerted efforts in Marrakech to support domestic action that will give effect to nationally determined contributions, combined with collaborative initiatives as part of an intensified Global Climate Action with non-state actors.

At the Marrakech Conference, countries around the world will also work hard to put in place measures for strengthening appropriate financial flows, a new technology framework and an enhanced capacity building framework as envisioned in the Paris Agreement with a view to supporting action by developing countries and the most vulnerable countries, in line with their own national objectives.

Mountain Partnership side events
The Mountain Partnership Secretariat (MPS) is organizing two side events to take place during the UNFCCC COP22:

Event title: “Mapping and understanding mountains to achieve the 2030 Agenda”
Organizers: MPS, Government of Guinea and Asociación Civil Oikos
Date and time: Friday, 11 November 2016 at 13.15-14.45
Venue: Pacific Room
Description: This event will assess the wellbeing of mountain communities and ecosystems globally. Because mountains are mentioned in three SDG targets, the discussion will also focus on ways to measure progress such as satellite data collection and household surveys

Event title: “The impact of climate change in mountain areas. A priority for a global action”
Organizers: MPS, Government of Andorra, the Government of Pakistan and The Mountain Institute
Date and time: Monday, 14 November 2016 at 13.15-14.45
Venue: Bering Room
Description: Vulnerable mountain ecosystems are critical for global fresh water. Covering 22 percent of all land, mountains are home to over 900 million people, many impoverished, food insecure and lacking resilience. We will review the needs and mechanisms for addressing climate change in mountains under the UNFCCC.
