Chogoria Mount Kenya Mountain Run (Postponed)

Mara Expeditions Community Based Organization, in collaboration with the Kenya Wildlife Service, Kenya Forest Service, Athletics Kenya, Flexi-Biogas and Tharaka- Nithi County Government, is organizing a mountain running half marathon on Mount Kenya. Participants will experience running at high altitudes as they start at 2 600 metres (m) and finish at 2 950 m above sea level, getting to experience the forests and wildlife on Mount Kenya along the way.

Those who participate in the Chogoria Mount Kenya Mountain Run may choose to do the “fun run” of 5 kilometres (km) or partake in the of 21 km altitude run, which will culminate at the Mount Kenya Bandas Lodge at 2 900 metres. Runners will be required to undergo eight weeks of pre-event training, conducted at different altitudes, to prepare for the challenge. There will also be a corporate team category for running. Each team is allowed a maximum of ten runners. However, an organization can register several teams for both challenges. Teams will also undergo pre-event training to prepare them.

Mara Expeditions Community Based Organization’s vision is to improve livelihoods through sports in the community. Their mission is to develop youth talent in sports and academics and to liaise with local and international athletic bodies to establish a mountain running hub. To build a strong community partnership in the Chogoria Mount Kenya Mountain Run, Mara Expeditions is working with other professional organizations like Athletics Kenya to develop young talent in athletics. Additionally, the Chogoria Mount Kenya Mountain Run will offer short-term employment assignments on event days to local young adults as well as promote business in the surrounding areas.
