Southern African Mountain Conference 2022

Cathkin Park, South Africa
From: 14.03.2022 to: 17.03.2022

The African Mountain Research Foundation, in association with the Afromontane Research Unit of the University of the Free State and the Global Mountain Safeguard Programme, is organizing the first ever Southern African Mountain Conference (SAMC2022), to be held in Maloti-Drakensberg in South Africa on 14–17 March 2022. The theme of SAMC2022 is “Southern African Mountains – Their value and vulnerabilities”.

Southern African mountains are complex socioecological and geopolitical transboundary systems that produce virtually all of the sub-arid region’s fresh water, host some of the richest biodiversity in the world, and sustain major agricultural and tourism economies. However, the mountains are under pressure from immediate threats and global change. Yet compared to many other mountains regions, including within Africa, southern Africa’s mountains are poorly researched and are therefore poorly understood systems.

SAMC2022 seeks to bring together key stakeholders in the scientific, policy, practitioner and livelihoods sectors.
