The Celebrations

This year’s International Mountain Day hub of celebrations is in Milan, Italy, with events that will increase attention to mountain environments and communities, and the significant effects of climate change on mountain areas.

The day will feature a panel, open to the public, featuring artists, scientists, activists, climbers and development experts who will discuss climate action in mountains. Free screenings of mountain-related short films will follow in the Climate Space area.

In the evening, pianist and composer Ludovico Einaudi will dedicate a concert to mountains.

These celebrations are an opportunity to reflect on the role of mountains for the survival of the entire planet and show our commitment to mountain peoples and environments.

All events will take place at the Teatro Dal Verme in Milan, Italy, starting at 15:00 hours. The concert will be held from 20:00 to 22:00 hours. All youth under 30 years old are eligible to receive a 30% discount on the ticket with the code SKMONTAGNAJB2019.

Ludovico Einaudi

Pianist and composer Ludovico Einaudi was born in Turin on 23 November 1955. Perhaps it was his mother, an amateur pianist, who gave him the first impulse to music, planting the seeds for what would become a fruitful, illustrious career. He began to study music at the Conservatory of Turin and graduated with a diploma in composition under Azio Corghi at the Conservatory of Milan. Immediately he began post-graduate studies with Luciano Berio, with whom he worked as assistant, and later with Karlheinz Stockhausen. He then spent several years composing for the ballet, the cinema and the theatre.

Einaudi has a special connection with the mountains. Regarding his new album Seven Days Walking he states, “I remember that in January 2018 I often went for long walks in the mountains, always following more or less the same trail. It snowed heavily, and my thoughts roamed free inside the storm, where all shapes, stripped bare by the cold, lost their contours and colors. Perhaps that feeling of extreme essence was the origin of this album.”

In 2016 he performed his “Elegy for the Arctic”, commissioned by Greenpeace, on a floating platform amidst the ice in the Arctic Ocean. The same year marked the debut of  the series of concerts  at Teatro Dal Verme of Milano, which would become an annual event: consecutive days of performances, special guests and projects, “to give back something to a city that has given me so much”.
