Avalon Historico-Geographical Society (HGS) is a non-profit NGO founded in 2004 with the aim of popularizing and promoting knowledge in the field of geography and history, promoting Kazakhstan in particular and Central Asia in general as travel destinations, preserving the region’s natural, historical and cultural heritage, elaborating of environmental decisions, including development of ecotourism and alternative means of transport. Avalon HGS now has over 160 members from six countries and an office in Karaganda, Kazakhstan. In terms of mountain development, Avalon is working on biodiversity protection and community-based ecotourism projects in mountain areas of Central Kazakhstan (Kyzylarai, Ulytau, Buiratau) and in the Northern Tien-Shan (Turgen, Kolsai). |
