Plateau Perspectives

Plateau Perspectives is a non-profit, non-government organization that aims to promote conservation and sustainable development in the Tibetan Plateau region of China. The NGO works closely with local governments, communities, organizations and national/international academic institutions:

• to develop sustainable agriculture and animal husbandry on the Tibetan Plateau;

• to protect the headwaters of the major rivers originating on the Tibetan plateau including the Yangtze, Yellow and Mekong rivers;

• to conserve the unique biological diversity of the grasslands and mountains;

• to promote more sustainable livelihoods in the fragile alpine environment;

• to enhance quality and access to social services for local communities.

The organization also places special emphasis on the interests and roles of local communities – and has assisted, for example, in the development of more community-friendly “collaborative management” models of conservation in the ecologically important source areas of the Yellow, Yangtze and Mekong rivers (the Sanjiangyuan region) in southern Qinghai Province.
