Società Meteorologica Italiana (Italian Meteorological Society)

SMI is a scientific organization established in 1865 as a weather observatory in Moncalieri. It is recognized as a Centennial Weather Station by UN-WMO. The NGO has a specialized library in meteorology, nivology, glaciology, climatology, climatic change. In cooperation with World Glacier Monitoring Service, it monitors the mass balance on Ciardoney glacier (W Alps). Since 1865, it publishes a a bulletin named “Nimbus”.

The main issues addressed by the organization are climate change and sustainability. More specifically:

  • Monitoring of climate change in mountain areas (mainly Alps)

  • Recovery of ancient time series and weather chronicles
