IPROMO inspires wildlife conservation in Malawi

01.10.2018

The Mountain Partnership training programme, IPROMO in 2017 inspired a collaboration between the chairman Danilo Godone and Godfrey Mfiti, a participant from Malawi, and a promising idea concerning the management of wildlife conservation in Malawi took shape. The IPROMO course in 2017 marked the tenth anniversary of the programme where an overview of central issues related to sustainable mountain development, ranging from watershed, natural resources and soils management to disaster risk reduction, climate change, economic development, mountain forestry and governance were discussed.

Mountain ecosystems are increasingly affected by global challenges such as food insecurity, climate change, land degradation and natural disasters. The extreme vulnerability of mountain ecosystems puts their natural resources under increasing pressure, which heavily affects wildlife and mountain peoples who depend on these resources.

The IPROMO chairman facilitated the collaboration between an Italian Nonprofit organization, Associazione Italiana Esperti Africa (AIEA), and the Malawi Department of National Parks and Wildlife, who were able to initiate a negotiation process to organize ranger training missions in Malawi Protected Areas.

AIEA, and its antipoaching branch, the Poaching Prevention Academy (PPA) under the lead of its head instructor, Davide Bomben, operates in several African countries, like Namibia, South Africa and Mozambique, carrying out park rangers training, wildlife conservation projects and related volunteer activities.

In September 2018 Brighton K. Kumchedwa, the Director of Department of National Parks and Wildlife, issued an official assignment letter to carry out the assessment of park ranger training levels and the accomplishment of the proposed anti-poaching training program in Lengwe National Park and the Mwabvi Wildlife Reserve for the next three years.

As the proposal has been accepted, Davide Bomben and Danilo Godone are now starting their funding campaign, and assembling trainers and volunteers to plan the first mission.
