International Mountain Day 2020 photo contest opens

The theme of the International Mountain Day 2020 photo contest launched by the Mountain Partnership Secretariat on 6 October is mountain biodiversity.

Did you know that about half of the world’s biodiversity hotspots are found in mountains? Mountains are home to an extraordinary range of plants and animals, from endangered mountain gorillas, snow leopards and condors to rare and strikingly beautiful plants such as orchids and lobelias. Many of the world’s most important crops and livestock species also originate in mountains, including potatoes, apples, tomatoes, alpacas, yaks and goats.

At the same time, mountain ecosystems and their biodiversity provide us with many goods and services, such as food and medicine, climate and air quality regulation, and attractive landscapes for tourism.

Join us in celebrating this extraordinary mountain biodiversity by entering the photo contest ahead of International Mountain Day (11 December). Participants can enter the contest in one of three categories, depending on their age, and submit up to three entries. The winner of each age category, to be selected by a FAO jury, will win an action camera.

Help protect mountain biodiversity by sending us your photos! All you need to do is take a picture of an extraordinary or unusual mountain plant, crop or animal, or a mountain landscape with high biodiversity. They might have an interesting appearance, behave in unexpected ways, provide unique benefits, or they might be extraordinary because of what they represent for local communities.

The deadline for entries is 14 November 2019 (12.00 CET).
