Students promote the SDG mountain targets

On 4 October 2017, members of the Utah International Mountain Forum (UIMF), a coalition of student clubs at Utah Valley University (UVU), promoted the three mountain targets of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) during the celebration of United Nations Day at UVU. The event was a part of an ongoing campaign coordinated by the UVU Office of Global Engagement to raise awareness about the SDGs among students, faculty and local communities in the state of Utah, United States of America. Through an engaged learning approach, UIMF members contributed to the overall goal of the campaign: to explain to their peers how to work towards implementing the 17 SGDs and their 169 associated targets adopted by the United Nations in 2015.

UIMF members raised awareness during the event about the importance of the three mountain targets of the SDGs, including the role of the Mountain Partnership Secretariat and numerous Mountain Partnership members who were directly involved in a UVU students raise awareness about the SDG mountain targets on UN Day 2017.14-month advocacy campaign to ensure mountains were mentioned in “Transforming our world: the 2030 agenda for sustainable development”. They reported about different ways in which UIMF members were able to contribute to the campaign. Former UVU student Jesler Molina shared his story about making a statement during the UN Open Working Group on SDGs on 11 December 2013. Furthermore, posters were displayed describing students’ efforts to advocate for the mountain targets during meetings hosted by UVU with more than 20 Permanent Representatives to the UN from different countries during the campaign. In addition, students informed the audience about the content of the three mountain targets.

UIMF will continue its efforts to raise awareness at local and regional levels about the mountain targets and their implementation during other activities of the campaign of the UVU office of Global Engagement to promote SDGs during 2017-2019.
