Landscape Initiative for Far-Eastern Himalayas

The International Centre for Integrated Mountain Development (ICIMOD) and partners in China, India and Myanmar in the Far-Eastern Himalayan Landscape implemented HI-LIFE, a regional conservation and development initiative to promote transboundary landscape approach to achieve the twin objectives of biodiversity conservation and sustainable development.

The Far-Eastern Himalayan Landscape is defined by the shared ecological, hydrological, historical, cultural and socioeconomic features that transcend country borders. HI-LIFE initiative takes strategic action in this area for transboundary cooperation. The Far-Eastern Himalayan landscape is unique in terms of species diversity and endemism, cultural diversity and unique geographical, sociocultural and biological features.

The initiative aims to promote a regional knowledge sharing platform and regional biodiversity database, joint management mechanisms for key species of high conservation value, harmonizing policies for protected area management, corridors and habitat connectivity, and sustainable tourism.

The vision for 2030 is strengthened transboundary cooperation with long-term partnership mechanisms, good landscape governance with optimized ecosystem services and livelihoods benefits, strengthened regional voice on the landscape’s contribution to global goals.
