Utah Congressman recognizes contribution to mountain targets at the UN

Congressman from Utah recognizes student contribution to the mountain targets implementations at High Level Political Forum 2018 on Sustainable Development held in New York. Congressman John Curtis (R-UT), made a statement at the U.S. House of Representatives on September 4, 2018 with recognition of members of the Utah International Mountain Forum, a coalition of student clubs at Utah Valley University for their advocacy of the mountain communities and the promotion of the Utah model of sustainable mountain development.

He commended members of the Utah International Mountain Forum (UIMF), a coalition of student clubs at Utah Valley University for the advocacy of the mountain communities and the promotion of the Utah model of sustainable mountain development during the High-Level Political Forum (HLPF) on sustainable development of ECOSOC on July 16-19, 2018.

Damon Ashcraft, Samuel Elzinga and Andrew Jensen, members of UIMF delegation at HLPF, made an oral statement advocating for the implementation of mountain targets during general debates of this highest forum of the United Nations on implementations of sustainable development goals on July 19, 2018.

The three mountain related targets are: 

SDG 6 (Water and Sanitation)

Target 6.6.

By 2020, protect and restore water-related ecosystems, including mountains, forests, wetlands, rivers, aquifers and lakes.

SDG 15 (Life on land).

Target 15.1

By 2020, ensure the conservation, restoration and sustainable use of terrestrial and inland freshwater ecosystems and their services, in particular forests, wetlands, mountains and drylands, in line with obligations under international agreements.

Target 15.4

By 2030, ensure the conservation of mountain ecosystems, including their biodiversity, in order to enhance their capacity to provide benefits that are essential for sustainable development.
