12.11.2018

A group of Bartang women participated in a study tour in the Pamir mountains to learn about natural resource management, tourism and vocational training. The four-day study tour in Lower Bartang-Khorog-Ishkashim was organized from 24-27 September 2018 by Mountain Partnership member,  'The Little Earth' with support from the US Forestry Service. The women were also participants of the "Clean Energy and Women on the Roof of the World" project. The study tour helped the participants gain experience, establish useful contacts and prompt discussion of new ideas for the development of their communities.

Ten members from the villages of Nisur, Ruhch, Savnob, Roshorv and Bopasor visited a number of various organizations, including handicraft stores, sewing and wool processing workshops, the University of Central Asia (UCA) and the Pamiri healing springs. Apart from the city of Khorog, the administrative center of Gorno-Badakhshan Autonomous Region (GBAO), participants also visited six different villages in the lower reaches of the Bartang valley and Ishkashim.

During day one of the tour, the participants visited a wool processing workshop in Bardaru located in the Lower Bartang. This was set up with support from the Mountain Societies Development Support Program (MSDSP), a branch of the Aga Khan Development Network. Later, the group when to Ravmed village, which is home to the Tajik Women Conservation project, where conservation experts train women in working with tourists and hunters.

The second day of the tour was devoted to visiting different organizations in Khorog. The organization they visited was a  non-governmental organization called "Madina"  that provides training on topics such as "leadership and personal growth" and "financial literacy". Another educational organization was called "Khayot" which trains young women in needlework and handicrafts.

"I liked the study tour very much. It was the first time that I visited Khorog and Ishkashim where I got acquainted with many successful women and their work. I have learned about different projects and ideas that they put into practice. I think all of us have discovered new opportunities that can make a difference for our communities" said Sohibjamol Shikorieva, a participant from Ruhch village.
