Mountains spotlighted at the Asia Pacific Forestry Week

The Mountain Partnership (MP) will be hosting a side event at the Asia-Pacific Forestry Week (APFW2019) in Incheon, Republic of Korea, titled “Policy Reforms for Mountains in the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development”. The event will be held on 19 June from 11 to 12:30.

With around 2 000 registered participants, the APFW2019 is one of the largest and most significant forestry meetings in the Asia-Pacific region this year. The theme is “Forests for Peace and Well-being”, and the event is cohosted by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) and the Korea Forest Service (KFS).

At the MP event, speakers from FAO, the Mountain Partnership Secretariat (MPS), the International Centre for Integrated Mountain Development (ICIMOD) and Bhutan will discuss the contribution of sustainable mountain development to the Agenda 2030 and will share experiences and efforts towards mainstreaming mountains in the Agenda 2030 process.

In Asia, 11 governments and 90 organizations are members of the Mountain Partnership and the side event will represent an opportunity to raise awareness about mountains among representatives of all mountainous Asian countries, international environmental organizations and civil society organizations.

In 2017, members of the MP endorsed the “Framework for action for the implementation of the Agenda 2030 for mountains”, in which they committed to increase efforts towards the recognition of mountains in sustainable development. This event at APFW2019 is an opportunity to contribute to that goal.
