Explorers carry MP flag to the Arctic

22.03.2018

“The Last Ice” is a project of exploration, adventure and science on some of the last frozen lakes of the northern hemisphere. A team of three athletes – climber and author Paku Crestas, entrepreneur and writer Albert Bosch and climber Pepe Ivars – with vast experience in extreme environments will study and document the impacts of climate change while traversing the main freshwater lakes in Arctic Canada, Russia and Siberia, and concluding in the North Pole. On their expeditions, the athletes will be carrying with them the Mountain Partnership flag.

The primary objective of The Last Ice is to be in close contact with one of the purest and most delicate regions on Earth. By doing so, the project aims to provide a fresh account of the consequences of global warming as well as to inform and raise awareness about the importance of biodiversity, the various threats Arctic areas are currently experiencing and how these threats are affecting the health and well-being of humankind.

The Last Ice consists of four consecutive expeditions, starting in Canada and ending in Earth’s most boreal region: the North Pole. The first expedition to the Great Slave Lake in Canada took place on 10-20 March 2018. Next, the team will visit Onega Lake and Baikal Lake in the Russian Federation.

Crestas, Bosch and Ivars are working closely with a team of researchers and educational institutions during each phase of the project. The team is conducting field research and also documenting their journey using 360-degree video recordings.
