Mountain biodiversity matters: FAO's high-level virtual event to mark International Mountain Day

27.11.2020

'Mountain biodiversity matters' is the theme of the high-level virtual event that the Mountain Partnership Secretariat at the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) will organize in observance of International Mountain Day (IMD) 2020 on 11 December. International leaders and mountain champions will discuss why mountain biodiversity is important for us all.

The focus of this year’s IMD is mountain biodiversity to highlight the social, economic and ecological value that mountain biodiversity holds for the planet. Mountains host about half of the world’s biodiversity hotspots and 30 percent of all Key Biodiversity Areas. Together with their biodiversity, mountains provide food and medicine, and help regulate climate, water, soil and air quality.

Yet mountains and their biodiversity are under pressure from land-use change and climate change, overexploitation, invasive species and pollution. Mountain people are among the hungriest in the world. A new study to be released on IMD by FAO, the Mountain Partnership Secretariat and the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification adds further evidence that in rural mountain regions of developing countries, food insecurity is still prevalent. The study demonstrates that between 2000 and 2017, the share of rural mountain people vulnerable to food insecurity in developing countries constantly increased.

'Mountain biodiversity matters' will promote dialogue and cooperation on solutions for halting the loss of mountain biodiversity, protecting mountain ecosystems and improving the livelihoods of mountain peoples around the world.

Mountain Partnership members internationally, including high-level speakers, youth, environmental experts, celebrities and mountain communities will share what they are doing to ensure that mountain communities are not left behind in the spirit of the UN 2030 Agenda.

The event will be held from 14.30 to 16.15 CET on 11 December. To access the event:
