Indicators for Elevating Mountains in the Convention on Biological Diversity’s Post-2020 Global Biodiversity Framework07.05.2021In November 2020, the CBD Subsidiary Body On Scientific, Technical and Technological Advice (CBD/SBSTTA/24/3Add.13) released a set of indicators to support the Post-2020 Global Biodiversity Framework. This brief highlights the indicators considered important for safeguarding mountain biodiversity and ecosystem integrity, in line with previous policy recommendations presented at the CBD Open-Ended Working Groups (OEWG-1 and OEWG-2) to elevate mountains in the Global Biodiversity Framework. The document provides a rationale for adoption of such indicators at multiple levels and suggestions of additional indicators for further considerations. This brief was prepared by GRID-Arendal and the UN Environment Programme in collaboration with the Mountain Research Initiative (MRI), and the Global Mountain Biodiversity Assessment (GMBA). It received financial support from the Government of the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg through the Vanishing Treasures programme. Citation: UNEP, GRID-Arendal, GMBA and MRI (2021).
