The Committee for the Revision of the Forestry Law, holds its first meeting for initial assessments

23/11/2020

23rd November 2020- Following the approval of its Internal Regulation, the Committee for the Revision of the Forestry Law (CRLFR) convened the first meeting in Maputo, Marracuene district on November 23.

The National Director of Forests, Eng. Imede Falume, led the meeting. Attended the meeting several other members of the CRLFR, government officials from the Ministry of Land and Environment (MTA) and consultants from the Food and Agriculture Organization United Nations (FAO), a strategic partner of the revision process.

In his speech, Mr. Falume stressed the need to carry out this process in a participatory, transparent and inclusive way, leading to a "...complete, strong and clearer law, at all levels".

The main objective of this technical meeting was to bring into discussion the general assessment of all documents developed so far by the commission. Namely: the general methodology for the revision of the forest law and the work plan, assessment report and gap analysis of the current forest and wildlife law, the first draft of the forest law, as well as the communication strategy for the initial phase of the process, which is expected to run until June 2021.

The meeting produced a series of initial recommendations to be submitted, debated and approved at an extended plenary meeting, scheduled for mid-December. It is expected that, from that point on, the process for the revision of the Law 10/99 will take shape and produce steps that are more concrete.
