15th January 2021, Cabo Delgado- The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) is providing assistance to 12,500 families affected by the violence in Cabo Delgado, through agricultural inputs distribution, using electronic cards.

Each family has access to a credit of approximately 50 USD, for the purchase of cereal and vegetable seeds, as well as agricultural tools (machetes and hoes), to ensure that the affected people produce their own food, reducing their dependence .

The crisis in northern Mozambique deteriorated rapidly in the last months as a result of the conflict, insecurity and violence in Cabo Delgado, leading to a displacement of more than 500,000 people and worsening food and nutritional insecurity in the region, where communities still need recover from the impacts of Cyclone Kenneth that affected the province in April 2019.

In response, FAO has already mobilized around USD 3.9 million through the generous contributions of the Governments of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland and the United States of America, and the UN's Central Emergency Response Fund (CERF).

FAO is currently implementing projects in five districts that host displaced families, four in Cabo Delgado (Ancuabe, Chiure, Metuge and Montepuez) and one in Nampula Province (Meconta), supporting the restoration of the affected population's livelihoods.

This support is part of a large humanitarian response by the United Nations, facing the humanitarian crisis that affects the most vulnerable, who were still trying to recover what they lost to tropical cyclone Kenneth.

In addition to the families affected by the violence, FAO has chosen to also include the families that host the displaced, to relieve pressure on their resources and food.

This support will allow the displaced population to produce food during the main agrarian season, reducing their dependence on host communities and food assistance.

The support package also includes a livestock component, through the distribution of 20,000 chickens and technical vaccination assistance to benefit 5,000 households in the districts that host the displaced families.

Under the United Nations Humanitarian Response Plan 2021 in Mozambique, FAO needs USD 15 million to face the emergency situation in Cabo Delgado and support displaced people and host communities that depend on the agricultural sector for their survival.
