Workshop on new Ecosystem Based District Forest Management Plan for three agroecological zones and districts in Myanmar by FAO - GEF Project (SLM)

The Final Workshop for launching the Ecosystem-based Sustainable Forest Management Planning Manual (ESFM PM), Ecosystem-based Sustainable Forest Management Implementation Manual (ESFM IM) and revised District Forest Management Plans (DFMPs) was held on 31st January 2020 at Myat Taw Win Hotel, Nay Pyi Taw.

The final workshop was organized back to back with a coordination meeting held at Ingyin Hall, Forest Department, on 30th January 2020, with a purpose to discuss further improvement of those Manuals and DFMPs and plan for follow-up activities. Before developing the Manuals and Plans, prior consultation meetings with respective departments and community members in pilot townships were implemented by “Ecosystem Conservation and Community Development Initiative” (ECCDI).

At the event, the Union Minister H.E U Ohn Win of the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environmental Conservation (MoNREC) delivered the opening remark, highlighting the need to transform the production-based traditional forest management to Ecosystem-based Sustainable Forest Management as the key strategy to mitigating the impact of climate change and in accord with the fifth sustainable development goal (SDG). He also thanked the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) for its technical guidance and financial assistance.

ECCDI served as main organizer of this event. After opening, Dr. Kyaw Tint (Former Director General of Forest Department) facilitated the workshop and addressed questions raised by attendees. The event was attended by Dr. Nyi Nyi Kyaw, Director General of Forest Department, Deputy Director Generals of Forest Department, senior officials of Forest Department, Deputy Director General of Environmental Conservation Department (ECD), FAO-SLM project team led by Mr. Xavier Bouan (Senior Technical Advisor) and representatives from NGOs and INGOs.
