Conservation Agriculture Farmers Field days

28/02/2019

FAO together with the Ministry of Agriculture, Water and Forestry, and the SCORE project under the Ministry successfully conducted Farmers Field days on 26 and 27 February 2019 in Omauni and Endola respectively. The Farmers Field days was conducted at two farmhouses in Omauni and Endola where the Ministry together with the farmhouse owners cultivated one hectare of land using rippers (conservation agriculture) for productivity comparison with the rest of the farm area that was prepared using the traditional disc ploughs. The observations made during farmers field days at both sites in Omauni and Endola revealed Rippers prepared land yielding better crops than the traditional disc ploughed land. Both the millets and legumes crops planted using the conservation agriculture techniques where in heathy conditions then the rest of the fields. During the same events, the Ministry of Agriculture, Water and Forestry staff enlightened the participants on the importance of conservation agriculture as a way of adaptation measure to respond to extreme events of rainfall variability because of climate change.

Farmers from several villages in Ohangwena region who attended both events expressed their gratitude to FAO and the Ministry of Agriculture, Water and Forestry for organizing the farmers field days where they had the opportunity to learn and share information for best farming practice. Most farmers shown interest in conservation agriculture after having seen the results demonstrated and asked that government support them with conservation agriculture implements so that when the next season come they will use this technique and prepare their field in time.

Both events closed with discussions with the farmers, asking them what they think about the conservation agriculture after having seen the production on both sites, to which most farmers answer where positive and most if not all would want to implement conservation agriculture at the respective fields.
