FAO Regional Office for Near East and North Africa

Ninth Session of the Regional Commission for Fisheries (RECOFI) , Kuwait

Fisheries have received high interest at international level due to its transboundary nature. Under the current international regime of governance and regulation of fisheries, the Regional Fisheries Management Organizations have an essential role in the management and conservation of living fisheries resources.

The fisheries and aquaculture sector in the Gulf and Gulf of Aden region presents a valuable potential for employment generation, livelihoods and food security enhancement for the countries. However, more accurate, precise, and reliable fisheries data and information is required for a science-based decision making process both at national and regional level. At its previous session, RECOFI has enforced a recommendation on minimum reporting of aquaculture data and information, in addition to the previously enforced minimum data reporting recommendation on fisheries. Those recommendations are essential for the monitoring of the status of fisheries and aquaculture in the region.

RECOFI has a critical mandate to promote well-managed, economically prosperous, socially inclusive, environmentally sustainable fisheries and aquaculture.  The Session will be attended by delegates from RECOFI Member States in addition to the representatives of invited regional institutions, academia and NGOs. The Commission, among others, will review the progress with the inter-sessional period activities and will discuss likely mechanisms to improve the overall effectiveness of RECOFI.
