8 June 2017, in New York -- The League of Arab States, Arab Organization for Agricultural Development, and Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) jointly organized a side event titled “Developing a Strategic Framework on Fisheries: Towards Sustainable Fisheries in the Arab Region” to present their ongoing collaboration on the implementation of SDG 14 with the aim of ensuring conservation and sustainable utilization of fishery resources in the Arab Region.

The event highlighted efforts toward the development of a strategic framework on fisheries in the Arab Region. Panelists discussed priorities for fisheries management and development opportunities to sustainably increase fisheries and aquaculture production. The event also explored ways to increase stakeholder participation in planning and managing fishery resources, optimizing utilization of fisheries and aquaculture resources, and increasing product valorization throughout the fish value chain.

The event resulted in a joint statement that called upon the League of Arab States, in cooperation and coordination with the Relevant Arab specialized organizations, and the regional and international organizations, to develop an Arab Strategic Framework on Fisheries with the aim of attaining Sustainable Fisheries in the Region, that ensures the implementation of SDG  14.

The speakers of the event were as follows:

-        Mr. Abdel Aziz Annani, Observer Mission of the League of Arab States in New York,

-        Mr Sheikh Khalifa bin Ali bin lssa Al-Harthy, Permanent Representative of the Sultanate of Oman to the United                   Nations

-        Mr Mbarka Bouaida, Secretary of States for Fisheries, Morocco,

-        Mr. Abdellah Srour, Executive Secretary, General Fisheries Commission for the Mediterranean, and

-        Prof. Ibrahim El Dukheri, Director of the Arab Organization for Agricultural Development.
