Caribbean aquaculture production, accounting for less than one percent of the world’s aquaculture, relies mostly on the application of foreign culture operations using exotic species and entailing potentially irreversible environmental impacts. Given the region’s limited technical expertise, infrastructure, capital investment and human resources in the aquaculture sector, the FAO Fisheries and Aquaculture Department held a regional technical workshop in Jamaica last October to discuss and assess the possibility of pooling resources at the regional level. The recently-published proceedings, A regional shellfish hatchery for the Wider Caribbean: Assessing its feasibility and sustainability, a “regional shellfish hatchery” supporting native molluscan species is assessed based on the interest of Caribbean countries, the culture potential of native species and the available technical knowledge on identified target species.
