Italy’s Carabinieri police force and FAO have agreed to strengthen cooperation in protecting the environment and biodiversity, the sustainable management of wildlife resources and the safeguarding of forests, including combating illegal logging.

In a meeting on Tuesday, Graziano da Silva and Commissioner Sacko underscored conflicts as a common denominator in areas facing food crises in the continent. "Conflict exacerbates hunger and in many cases hunger and food insecurity to intensify strife and social unrest," the FAO Director-General said.

The world’s oceans offer both challenges and solutions to the Sustainable Development Agenda, and managing them carefully is essential for global food security as well as the livelihoods of hundreds of millions of people, FAO Director-General José Graziano da Silva said at the UN Oceans Conference.

These initiatives "are a reminder of the importance of oceans and seas. They cover 70 percent of the surface of our planet, provide half the world's oxygen, and serve as home to 80 percent of life" on earth, said FAO Director-General José Graziano da Silva, in a video message.

Rising shipping costs and larger import volumes are set to lift the global food import bill to more than USD 1.3 trillion this year, a 10.6 percent increase from 2016, FAO said today in its biannual Food Outlook. The FAO Food Price Index – also released today - rose 2.2 percent in May.
